You can cut all the flowers

Recently I watched from my window the leaves turn golden and fall from the trees. It reminded me that even through we might feel alone at times, were are actually all together and going through joint experiences.

At the same time I read “You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep spring from coming,” which is commonly attributed to Pablo  Neruda. While authorship can be debated (Ernesto Che Guevara and Octavio Paz are other options), the words themselves powerfully remind us that we exist in a world of change - one that holds the potential for renewal and growth after loss.

During winter we can look around and in our ‘dead’ world there is the promise of a vibrant flower or leafy tree ready to burst forward in spring. These are our foundations - what grew the previous summer, what has made us, the strengths that have been passed to us from previous generations.

The decaying leaves remind me of the ‘circle of life’ - over winter these will be broken down to fuel the explosion of life that will happen in spring. This renewal will happen without any input from us.

So in this time of loss and decay, the familiar landscape of your life can feel muted and chilled.  Fear, financial strain, and emotional turmoil can leave you feeling numb.

However, just as the tree is waiting to burst into new growth, cultivating gratitude and positivity can become your source of hope during this challenging time

Remember, even the harshest winter cannot stop spring from eventually arriving. You will emerge from what you are currently experiencing ready to embrace a  brighter future.
